The heritage mansion in the heart of Dandia Bazar was built in 1936 by Ramchandra Raoji Pawar. He studied law at Columbia University and was roommates with Dr BR Ambedkar. Pawar returned to work for the Maharaja and was eventually made Diwan of Amreli. He named his mansion Arudh Mahal after Indian mystic and yogi Siddharudha Swami. Half hidden by a clump of tall bamboo, Arudh Mahal is a little gem run as a charming B&B by Shital Pawar and his wife. Overlooking a quiet leafy courtyard that shuts out the city, the spacious rooms are modern with attached bathrooms and dresser. The lounge has old curios with a separate smoking zone. Guests can access the lounge, garden, a common room
(library) and the verandah. The huge terrace with an organic terrace garden is accessible on request. The affable Shital and Jai stay with their son, parents and friendly German Shepherd in another portion of the mansion. They leave no stone unturned in helping guests plan their itinerary in Ahmedabad or excursions to Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park and the Statue of Unity. The tariff includes tea and breakfast, usually poha (beaten rice snack) topped with sev, served in the verandah.
