A planned city, Gandhinagar is the state capital with wide streets that are numbered and cross streets named after letters of the Gujarati alphabets. The streets create thirty rectangular residential sectors with schools, shopping areas, playgrounds and parks. The capital complex and government offices including the Assembly called the Vidhan Sabha, the Secretariat called Sachivalaya and government office buildings like Udhyog Bhavan, which houses the
offices of the industries departments, are located in the centre. The main source of employment in the private sector is provided by two industrial estates dedicated to engineering, electronics and non-polluting light industries. There is also a software technology park called Infocity.
In recent years, Gandhinagar has grown into an educational hub with prestigious institutions as the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, National Institute of Design (Gandhinagar campus), Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Gujarat National Law
University, Bhaskaracharya Institute For Space Applications and Geo-Informatics, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Unitedworld (a campus with a business school, design school and law school), Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India and colleges for engineering, dentistry, management among others located in and around Gandhinagar or on the highways from Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad. Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), a big ticket project ,will have dedicated facilities for finance and tech companies. It is located about 8km from Gandhinagar. With plenty of trees lining the roads and pretty parks, Gandhinagar is a pleasant place worth visiting. However, it does get crowded during the many large-scale exhibitions that occur at the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre or the helipad ground.
