Yogoda Satsanga Society of India
Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS), a non-religious, non-sectarian organization was established 100 years ago, in 1917, by Sri Paramahansa Yogananda, to disseminate the scientific teachings of Kriya Yoga, to all interested Truth-seekers. Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952), a great Maharshi, spent his life spreading the sacred ‘Kriya Yoga’ teachings. His spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, has transformed millions of people and is translated into 45 world languages, including 13 Indian languages.
Internationally, the organization is called Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) with its headquarters at Los Angeles, USA and has more than 500 meditation centres throughout the world. The YSS headquarters is located at Dakshineswar, Kolkata, whereas the main distribution centre of YSS teachings and publications is located at Ranchi, Jharkhand. YSS has four Ashrams, and more than 200 meditation centres throughout India.
The aims and ideals of YSS include the liberation of man from the threefold suffering: physical disease, mental inharmonies, and spiritual ignorance. Also included is the dissemination of definite teachings and yoga techniques for overcoming these, and for attaining direct personal experience of God through meditation — the one divine highway to which all paths of true religious beliefs eventually lead. Serving mankind as one’s larger self is another ideal of YSS.
In 1977, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the mahasamadhiof Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda, the Government of India issued a commemorative stamp in his honour. With the stamp, the government published a descriptive leaflet, which read, in part:“The ideal of love for God and service to humanity found full expression in the life of Paramahansa Yogananda. Though the major part of his life was spent outside of India, still he takes his place among our great saints. His work continues to grow and shine ever more brightly, drawing people everywhere on the path of the pilgrimage of the Spirit.”
More recently on March 7th, 2017, the Government of India released a postal stamp at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, honouring the 100 years of completion of YSS. Hon’ble Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi presided over the function.
Almost fifty years ago, in the year 1967, YSS devotees from Ahmedabad came together and formed a group meditation centre, Yogoda Satsanga Dhyana Kendra – Ahmedabad. The spiritual activities of group meditations, praying for world peace and harmony, and the charitable activities of serving the less unfortunate have since then been continuing uninterruptedly. A YSS Dhyana Mandir at Ahmedabad was inaugurated on May 10, 2009. In addition to the devotees of the beloved Guru, thousands of interested Truth-seekers visit the Dhyana Mandir annually to absorb the peace and tranquility from its spiritual environs, and to seek solace from the daily grind of the busy modern life. Also available at the Dhyana Mandir are Paramahansaji’spublications (in English, Hindiand Gujarati) which not only offer practical guidance for everyday living, but also yoga techniques for liberation of mankind. We invite you to visit our Dhyana Mandir, just off Ashram Road and experience its serenity and beauty.
